St. Stephen Academy was established in 2004 at Kafer, as a co-educational school affiliated to Indian Certificate of secondary Education. It is a Christian minority institution owned and administered by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Darjeeling.

St. Stephen School visualizes the empowerment of the youth of today to lead, to serve, and excel in creating a better tomorrow. Annual theme and monthly themes help students to focus on their goals of study. Small class sizes allow for one to one interaction among the students under the supervision of teachers. The school encourages learning of the languages  English, Nepali, Lepcha and Hindi.

The school has separate hostels for girls and boys.

Fr. Felix D’souza and Fr Paul D’souza with the help of the Sisiters of St. Joseph of Cluny and the staff members guide 455 students in this tiny Himalayan village.
