In the year 1968, Fr Richard McDonald, The Parish priest of St. John’s Church was going home for his holiday and Fr Jellici was requested to say Mass in Malat and Dhajea for six Catholic families. Fr Jellici kept up his missionary work visiting Nagagari and Mirik.

In 1974 the Tea Estate Manager Mr Jeewan Gurung requested Fr Jellici to pray over his ailing grandfather. This is how Fr Jellici entered Mirik. He requested Bishop Eric Benjamin and Fr Prendergast to buy a plot of land in Mirik.

On 26th November 1980 a senate meeting was held in the Bishop’s House, which decided to entrust Mirik and Balasun to the Salesians of Don Bosco.

On 15th April 1982, the foundation stone of Don Bosco Kendra was laid by Fr Thomas Panakezham. On 8th November 1982, Fr Alakulam celebrated the first Mass in Mirik Busty in Mr Earnest Lepcha’s house.

The non formal coaching classes led to foundation of a small school building in 1991. Recognition was granted to the school on 14th April 2005 as Junior  High School up to class 8. Immediately a new school building was constructed and inaugurated by Bishop Stephen Lepcha on 26th April 2008.

During Fr V C Jose’s  tenure as Rector, the school was upgraded to class 10. The school is recognized by the West Bengal Board of Education. Now, Don Bosco School conducts classes from 1 to 10 with 465 students.
